SAN FRANCISCO, CA - June 19, 2019 - San Francisco’s highly successful Filipino inspired night market UNDISCOVERED SF returns for a third season, every third Saturday of the month July - October, from 4p-10p. The free, family-friendly night market located in SOMA Pilipinas, San Francisco’s Filipino cultural heritage district, will take place in a new location, 598 Stevenson St. @ 7th St., except for August 18th, where the market will take place on Folsom St. between 6th and 8th in conjunction with Sunday Streets, 11a-5p. The seasonal night market highlights the diverse spectrum of Filipinx culture, featuring live music, food pop-ups, artists, makers, performers, local businesses, and community organizations.

Bay Area native, dance-pop singer, and “Queen of Freestyle”, Jocelyn Enriquez will headline on Saturday, July 20, along with world-renowned DJ crew Triple Threat (DJs Shortkut, Vinroc and Apollo), island-soul-pop duo CRSB, and up and coming DJ Bitesize. Other all-star headliners for UNDSCVRD season 3 include veteran Bay Area reggae band Native Elements - August 18, genre-bending DJ SoSuperSam - September 21, and emcee/community organizer Bambu - October 19.  With attendance expected to surpass previous years, the night market’s new location will accommodate thousands more.

“The #1 supporter of our growth has been the City of San Francisco. They recognize that the Filipino community is innovative and can deliver results. We’re so fortunate that we have city leaders that are passionate about developing our community and will make the investments necessary to see us blossom into our full potential. The City of San Francisco is a trailblazer when it comes to forming community partnerships,” shares Desi Danganan, Executive Director of UNDISCOVERED SF and Kultivate Labs.

UNDISCOVERED SF is one of several projects catalyzing public and private investment on Stevenson Street between 6th and 7th. In addition to UNDISCOVERED SF, the City of San Francisco and local partners including Zendesk, local artist Sylvester Guard Jr., the Mid-Market Community Benefit District, Parks Alliance and other local organizations will be bringing a new mural, pop-up recreation activities and new lighting to this block of Stevenson Street over the course of the next several months.

UNDISCOVERED SF is part of a multi-prong strategy to build a thriving, sustainable community of economic and cultural activity in the SOMA Pilipinas cultural district. Since its launch in 2017, the night market has demonstrated its value with measurable results:

  • Generated ~$270,000 economic activity in 2018, an 8% increase from previous year

  • Kultivate Labs received $57,000 in corporate donations for economic development in 2018, doubled from previous year

  • In 2017 UNDSCVRD was financed with $125,000 in City Grants

  • In 2017 UNDSCVRD generated ~$250,000 in economic activity for the community, a 2x ROI for the city

  • In 2017 UNDSCVRD drew ~35,000 people to the cultural district

“The Office of Economic and Workforce Development is a proud supporter of Undiscovered SF since the beginning in 2017. Through food, art, music, and lights, we are reviving Stevenson Street, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs and celebrating the Filipino community,” said Joaquín Torres, Director of the Office of Economic and Workforce Development. “This collective effort by the Stevenson Street community to generate more positive activities in Central Market and SOMA allows us to partner with and promote the Filipino Cultural District, as we transform Stevenson Street with the vibrancy of Filipino culture and spark people’s imaginations for what that future of this alley could be,” says Joaquin Torres, Director of the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), San Francisco.

UNDISCOVERED SF is a project of Kultivate Labs, a non-profit business accelerator that advances socially conscious commerce, and Make it Mariko, a Bay Area event production company. UNDSCVRD is supported by grants from the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development through the SoMa Community Stabilization Fund. About UNDISCOVERED SF:
UNDISCOVERED SF is produced & conceived by Kultivate Labs, a non-profit business accelerator, and Make it Mariko, SF event producer. We believe that entrepreneurship is one of many ways to build wealth in local communities.  By creating new economic opportunities and closing the income inequality gap in San Francisco, we hope to stem the displacement of our low and middle income residents.

UNDISCOVERED SF is made possible by a grant from the SOMA Stabilization Fund and the Mayor's Office of Housing and Community Development, and the hopes and dreams of the Filipino community, and those that came before us.

About Kultivate Labs:
Kultivate Labs is a Non-profit Economic Development and Arts Organization. We create thriving commercial ecosystems by accelerating businesses that preserve culture and community. We provide space and opportunities for the arts to flourish so that commercial activities are activated and reflect the community at large.

About Make it Mariko:
Make it Mariko (pronounced mah-ri-ko) is a Bay Area event production company focused on creating magical, meaningful, and unforgettable moments. Moments that make you feel, make you cry, make you laugh, give you perspective on life; moments that you’ll remember forever. We focus on weddings, nonprofit & arts events in the San Francisco Bay Area.
