Hard Knock Radio – Bambu & DJ Phatrick

Bambu and DJ Phatrick were on Hard Knock Radio with Weyland Southon yesterday. The interview is a semi repeat from a few months back, but now you can hear it in it’s entirety.

On the real… this is probably one of the best interview’s with Bambu i’ve heard yet. I’m not going to say anything more than – it will definitely be an educational experience, (Props to Weyland for the documentation).

**insider tip – Bambu talks about his role in the new Indiana Jones movie! Bambu has more tricks up his sleeve than the average emcee, can you spot him in this pic?

(Which is a great segway into how) – I recently purchased a book titled “Filipino’s in Hollywood” by Carina Monica Montoya. Although I heard from a credible scource that some of the facts could’ve been double checked, amongst other critiques, this is definitely a step in the right direction to record how Filipino’s have contributed to the history of film and entertainment.

I’m looking forward to a similar book about “Filipino’s in Hip Hop…”

I sat down with Weyland Southon a few weeks ago for the second installment of “the lo-down”. If you don’t know who Weyland is then you probably don’t listen to “Hard Knock Radio” on KPFA, and if you haven’t been listening – you should (4pm, Mon-Fri, PST)! Weyland is one of Hard Knock Radio’s founders and producers and has interviewed an array of artists, community leaders, activists, and writers for over 10 years!! I figure he’d be one of the best resources to provide insight on do’s and dont’s for being interviewed on the radio.

P - When should an artist start promoting themselves and seek press opportunities?

W – When their shit is tight! I hate wack demo’s… people DO judge a book by its cover, and presentation does count. When you’re serious about your work that’s when you should start looking for press opportunities. Obviously, when you have a show coming up, releasing an album, or have something interesting to talk about, you can start sending out your demo’s and press kits.

P – How accessible is radio airplay for an independent artist?W – It’s possible, you need to be persistent. Don’t worry about being a pain in the ass, and don’t take it personally… muthafucka’s are busy! You’ve got to have a plan A, B, C, D… and give the full court press.

P – Biggest mistakes made when interviewing?W – Basically, not taking the interview seriously. Don’t come in here with a posse and try to get your boys on the mic. Don’t show up drunk or high. Think about what you’re going to say. Show up on time! Oh, and don’t have your girl sit on your lap while you’re being interviewed…

P – What should an artist do to prepare for an interview?W – Bring your music with you (radio edit version), know the

, and practice! Learn how to lead the conversation to talk about what YOU want, and make sure you submit a press release with all your information and what you want people to know. Hiring a publicist would help you take care of all these things, and prepare the both of you.

P – Over the years i’m sure you’ve acquired a sixth sense for artists that have the potential to maintain a long term career, what characteristics do they usually have?

W – They take their craft seriously. They peep game wherever they go. They make QUALITY music! These are artists that have a game plan, set goals, are on time. They surround themselves with good people, and let go of relationships that will hinder their career. Being responsible and knowing how to manage your career is part of being a great artist.
