With a statewide deadline of 2029, the implementation of a true Ethnic Studies curriculum is at the forefront of school district agendas. But Ethnic Studies is more than a graduation requirement, it has a profound positive impact in the classroom that ripples directly to the communities of students.
San Francisco, CA - September 19, 2022 - UNDISCOVERED (UNDSCVRD) SF — San Francisco’s premier Filipino Night Market and Food & Music Festival — is back for its sixth season as a daytime, theme park-inspired festival on October 22, 2022 from 12-6pm. This year UNDSCVRD, a Kultivate Labs and Make it Mariko creation, spans several locations in the SOMA Pilipinas Filipino Cultural Heritage District and welcomes notable Filipino American guests such as DJ Miles Medina and Chef Harold Villarosa.
After the extrajudicial murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Dominique “Rem’mie” Fells, Oluwatoyin Salau and countless other Black people in 2020, thousands of artists painted murals on the streets of Oakland as an expression of protest, activism and solidarity. Recognizing the historic significance of this artistic groundswell, EastSide Arts Alliance teamed up with Nomadic Press to document and preserve the outdoor gallery and the stories behind them. Their new book, Painting the Streets: Oakland Uprising in the Time of Rebellion, is a full-color, hardcover art book featuring nearly 100 murals created in support of the ongoing struggle for Black liberation along with essays, poems and other reflections by activists and cultural workers.
In honor of its publication, San Francisco Public Library’s African American Center is hosting a 3-month exhibition showcasing the local Black artists who captured the spirit of the June 2020 movement and transformed Oakland.
Artist As First Responder (AAFR) launches three artist residencies to address the historical absence of spaces and resources for emerging and mid-career Black artists. Established and stewarded by independent curator Ashara Ekundayo, AAFR is an Oakland-based organization and 6-point philanthropic and interactive arts platform that reifies, engages, and financially supports Black, Indigenous, and other Artists of Color whose creative practices heal communities and save lives.

The gala’s theme of “renewal” promotes generational healing and rejuvenation and how KSW’s historical roots of activism and cries for self determination continue to inspire the collective imagination for an abundant future — a vision made even stronger in the face of ongoing anti-Asian hate.
After 10 successful years of radically transforming organizations and institutions in the Bay Area, Edutainment for Equity (E4E) is focusing their efforts to other California cities. E4E — the brainchild of Oakland-based educators and artists Candice Wicks-Davis and Hodari Davis — provides field tested, arts integrated professional development and consulting that helps organizations imbed equity into their policies and practices. What started as a temporary pivot to virtual workshops and trainings due to the COVID-19 shelter in place mandates the past two years, E4E isn’t going back to in-person again. Giving other agencies across the state and country access to their services more quickly and effectively.
Nomadic Press and EastSide Arts Alliance have joined forces to create Painting the Streets: Oakland Uprising in the Time of Rebellion, a full-color, hardcover art book featuring the Oakland murals that emerged in tandem with the international and national protests against the police brutality/murder of Black people and systemic-institutional racism in the US between May and October of 2020. Through visuals from over 65 artists, essays, interviews and poetry, this book — now available to pre-order for $40, and ships at the end of February 2022 — offers context for a response to the current, and historical, sociopolitical moment and inspires a vision of the future grounded in the struggle for Black liberation.
Contemporary Asian American Activism: Building Movements for Liberationaffirms that Asian Americans have always been at the forefront of social justice movements for generations and guides readers toward emancipatory futures. Dr. Rodriguez will additionally be launching pre-registration for her mini-course on Asian American activism for her on-line School for Liberating Education. The course will draw significantly from the book and her own experiences as a community organizer.

SEED Network launches as an online community/platform dedicated to organizing and uplifting BIPOC business by providing educational and economical tools for entrepreneurs in San Francisco, and re-granting the money to business providers.
The summit is open to all self-identifying Pinays, transgender Pinays, and gender nonconforming Pinxys who want to learn how to bring their ideas to life, decolonize restorative justice, heal from the “scarcity mindset” instilled by stolen self-narratives, as well as bring their expertise to help others in the community. Attendees can expect panels, lightning talks, interactive workshops, music, spontaneous dancing, and meaningful connections.

I’ve always been interested in social impact work, and I got the chance to combine social impact and entertainment as an intern under UNDSCVRD SF’s BrownThought Academy. During my internship, I was introduced to PapaLoDown Agency and became even more interested in the mission and work that PapaLoDown dedicates itself to.
