The latest art show by Nate1 ’No Promises, No Demands’, will feature portraits of iconic figures in music history including Pat Benatar, Erykah Badu, Sade, Bjork, Madonna and Blondie. Each piece is 10″x15″, hand illustrated using ink and airbrush techniques, and displayed in a glass top, 1″ black frame. Graffiti letters spelling out the name of each artist is cleverly hidden in the portraits. The title of the collection is taken from a lyric in Pat Benatar’s song ‘Love is a Battlefield’ which inspired Nate1 while creating his recent work.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Historic Bay Area Sports Bar ‘7 Mile House’ Celebrates 160th Anniversary
Offering Free Adobo All Day To Thank Customers

BRISBANE, CA, JANUARY 28, 2013 – 7 Mile House, one of the oldest bars in the San Francisco Bay Area, and the only “mile house” left standing in its original location, will celebrate 160 years of business since they opened their doors in 1853, on Wednesday, February 6, 2013. The venue’s transformation from stagecoach stop, pony express route, brothel, biker and trucker hangout, infamous sports gambling den, to now a lively sports bar and live music venue, demonstrates 7 Mile House’s resilience through the decades.

“It’s an honor to preserve the history of 7 Mile House and celebrate 160 years of this establishment’s endurance through the ups and downs of the economy,” Vanessa Garcia Villacarlos, owner of 7 Mile House, said. “We’re proud to have become a place for sports fans to cheer on our home teams, and provide a space to support local musicians and entertainers.”

“7 Mile House has brought attention to our city, bringing visitors to our area, and serves us well as the gateway into Brisbane. Owner Vanessa Villacarlos and her crew have turned around this historic gem by revitalizing the venue, and more importantly, the community that surrounds it. ” – Clarke Conway, Brisbane Mayor (PRO TEM) and Councilmember.

7 Mile House will celebrate this important milestone of Bay Area history by serving one of its most popular items on the menu, Pork Adobo with Rice, for free from 12pm-7pm, (while supplies last). Customers will also enjoy live entertainment during the day, featuring the LP Band, and from 8pm-1am karaoke will be hosted by locally acclaimed Karaoke Jockey, Glenny Kravitz. A commemorative anniversary t-shirt will be given to the first 100 patrons.

ABOUT 7 MILE HOUSE SPORTS BAR & GRILL:
Along the perimeters of three Bay Area cities: San Francisco, Brisbane and Daly City, a new (yet historic) restaurant and bar has quickly emerged as the best spot to dine and be entertained on this side of the Bay Area. Established in 1853, 7 Mile House is a family restaurant and bar serving up a unique mix of homestyle Italian/American/Filipino food beautifully plated with a wide array of beers and almost any cocktail you can imagine. A good mix of great food, fun atmosphere, sports and musical entertainment draws a diverse, family-oriented crowd — a far cry from its 160 years of ‘colorful’ history.

It’s been about 2 weeks now since I’ve started the balancing act of work and baby, and I must say it’s been pretty smooth, (so far). Not to say there haven’t been some hiccups along the way, I’ve had to push back a few meetings to adjust to baby’s schedule, but overall I’m handling it all pretty well. Luckily we live in the age of mobile devices that make breast feeding and tweeting a seamless act! LOL!

Tip # 2 – Stop and Smell the Diapers

I used to spend all day working, not looking up. Now my work flow is a constant stop and go motion, kind of like sitting in traffic… I can imagine this must be frustrating for some people. I’ve come to embrace the new rhythm of my day because the work will always be there waiting to get done, but my son’s first everything can happen at any moment! I take pleasure in making him smile and figuring out what kind of music he likes to hear, and holding him a few minutes longer before getting back to the keyboard.

So stop and smell the diapers… and enjoy all the small moments of the day with your child. Your to do list will wait for you, trust!

San Francisco based artist Nate1 is mostly known for his graffiti art and murals, but his artistic range is much more diverse. On Friday, January 25, 2013, Nate1 will be selling a collection of his work entitled “Love Hangover”, (inspired by the Diana Ross song). This collection is unique in that each piece is one of a kind, including a portrait of Diana Ross and Stevie Nicks in a graffiti inspired “Alphabet Dress”. A total of 16 pieces will be up for grabs, prices range from $40 – $350. Perfect timing for a Valentine’s gift, and a possible Love Hangover of your own.

“If this art show was an album, this would be the title track. When I drew this series of Alphabet Dress Girls I was a little burnt out on painting with brushes and wanted to do more of an illustrative period. Just to cleanse the palette. I busted out these out and forgot about them until we were editing the pieces for this show. Whoever gets the Diana Ross portrait is getting one of my favorites.” – Nate1

Nate Tan aka Nate1 was born in England and moved to SF at the age of 4 in 1975. When he was 16 he started his 20+ year endeavor as a Hip Hop Graffiti artist and muralist. Today, Nate owns a successful children’s clothing line called New Skool. It is manufactured locally and has been distributed across the US, Japan, Ireland, Australia and Hong Kong.

Nate’s art work has been documented in many graffiti art magazines such as Can Control, Ghetto Art, the Source, One Track Mind and San Francisco Murals. He was interviewed on the graffiti documentary Piece by Piece as a pioneer of the West Coast graffiti art scene.

In 1996 Nate started transfering his street aesthetic and urban art form from the walls to canvas and most recently wood frame canvases. Nate has had numerous art shows in San Francisco and is an in house artist at Secession Art and Design Gallery. He also teaches a Graffiti History and Sketching Class at 1AM Gallery in SF. Nate’s artwork themes range from graffiti typography, cartoon spray cans and characters to portraits of urban landscapes. His goal is to educate people by taking the word graffiti out of its negative context and reinventing it’s meaning in a positive light.

I gave birth, and have been raising my business PapaLoDown PR since 2007 (officially since 2009), and it has been a wonderful journey. I’m proud to say we’re still going strong after 5 years! Creating a career that works for me, my goals, and what I believe in has been amazing… The “Independent Hustle” is a 24/7 job, but you choose when to check in and out, and you make the rules. It doesn’t work for everyone, and yes a reliable paycheck is definitely a trade off, but the false sense of security from a 9-5 is something I was willing to risk, and it has paid off.

This year, I’m excited to start a new venture with the birth of my son… Creating new inspiration and challenges in my career, and my personal life. The hustle just got much more serious!

So here I go… “MamaLoDown” will be my reflections, lessons, and adventures in being a parent and running a small business. I’m not the only one out there either, so I hope to share what I learn from other parents on the independent hustle tip too.

Tip #1 – Make a schedule, every minute counts!

Working from home has it’s challenges when you can be distracted by errands, organizing your closet, or a sunny day is more appealing than responding to emails. So you can imagine the challenge of adding a newborn baby to the mix needing pretty much all of your attention for 1-2 hours, every 3 hours!

So I’m making an hourly/daily/weekly schedule accounting for each hour to keep me on track. That will allow me to prioritize my son’s needs, take care of my own health, keep my home in order, and still manage my business!

The waves are much bigger now, balance and timing is the only way to maintain a smooth ride. This will be the first week I test it all out, wish me luck!

Yes, he may have been talking about fictional children of Narnia, but this statement is true for a hustler as well.

The beauty of being an independent hustler is that you control what your career will be. Sounds pretty basic, but let’s dig a little deeper…

When you apply for a position at any big corporation, the goal is to make your strengths applicable to the job that you are applying for. That means reformatting your resume, crafting a cover letter, and maybe a slight exaggeration about your “proficiency” in Spanish (Admit it, we have all done it).

Whatever the case is, you have to meet the needs of the company. YOU have to change. If you don’t meet those standards, they move on to the next person, and the job hunt continues. In this economy, this hunt could last a while…It only takes a few rejection letters to completely crumble your self esteem, and make you doubt your abilities.

However, for independent hustlers, this is not the case. Opening your own business or being a part of a small company, you are able to mold the work around your personal strengths. You really become what you believe you are. For example, I have a strong interest in fashion, and being a part of PapaLoDown , I get to pursue designers, stylists, and bloggers in the industry. I have made that part of my apprenticeship.

Being able to define your own career is a powerful concept. Not only do you get to flex your talents, but you also gain a sense of validation, which is crucial for those of us who are just starting out in a new industry. Like the late great Whitney Houston said, “The Greatest Love of all is inside of me.” (And who are we to disagree with Whitney…)

Gaining this appreciation for yourself will only fuel you to be more ambitious, which leads to personal and professional success. Soon others will take note of not only your own accomplishments, but also your confidence in your own abilities.

Before you know it recruiters will be throwing jobs at you! (Okay maybe not, but you will have a stronger presence)

So if you have had a share of rejection emails, why not start something for yourself? Volunteer with an organization. Put together a project for your community. Write a blog. Do anything that will give you that sense of accomplishment (and that you can put on your resume).

In my last blog post I discussed the importance of braving out into the real world and building one’s network. However, once connections are made you may be wondering to yourself, “Now what do I do?” The follow up of course!

Much like what one should do if they scored a cutie’s digits during an evening out on the town, it is crucial to follow up with that person(s) in a timely manner, or your initial interaction may as well never have happened.

Why?

Because unless you are blessed with extraordinary memory, you may possibly forget the person whose business card you’re holding in your hand soon after the event. This is especially true at events like professional mixers/networking events, where you may acquire 5-15 business cards in one evening!

The purpose of the follow up is to remind the recipient who you are, where you met, what the two of you talked about, and reminds him/her to contact you in the future. It takes your brief interaction to the next step and creates more of an opportunity to strengthen your ever-growing network!

Plus the nice thing about the follow up is that it can take shape through various platforms of communication. It could be through an email, a linkedin message, a phone call or even through snail-mail (just keep in mind, it should be professional so try to stay away from text messaging your follow up!)
Best of luck to you all,

We all have read blogs by experts in different fields sharing their professional experience and expertise, but we seldom read about how they got there. So I thought it is time to hear from the other side of the experience spectrum. This series of blogs will document what an apprentice learns on the way to becoming an independent hustler.

As most of know PapaLoDown is for the independent hustler. From these months of working with clients and the PLD team, I have gathered countless tips from some of the best hustlers San Francisco has to offer, and if I have learned anything, it is that hustlers did not merely follow the footsteps of the people before them. They forged their own path, and I am no exception.

So as I start paving my own career, I first have to define what “being an independent hustler” means to me. Although I do have a compendium of advice from seasoned artists, educators, designers, and activists, it is imperative that I have a clear vision of what I want and how I am going to get there. Sounds easy right?

It has taken me a few months to really understand what it takes to be a hustler, and I feel like the reason it took that long is because all my life I had this programmed image of what it meant to grow up, and that was to go to college, get a 9-5 job (with benefits), work for 30 years, retire.

Well, I went to college, got internships, did the extra-curricular activities, graduated on the Dean’s list, and where did it all get me? Working the not so fabulous life of retail, making just enough money to pay my bills. I guess the recession doesn’t really care about my resume…

However, working at PapaLoDown opened my eyes to possibilities that I couldn’t even imagine a few years ago. It may sound cliche, but once you free yourself from the 9-5 mentality you can actually be anything you want.

So for me the biggest aspect of being an independent hustler is overcoming the first mental block that you are obligated to enter the workforce in the traditional sense. Times have changed, the economy has changed…. Hustling is all about making opportunities for yourself.

Surrounding yourself with other like-minded individuals would not only help you reach your goals, but also it reminds you that you are not doing it alone. I know that it has helped me get though these early stages.

Keep Hustlin’
