A Tribute – Matt Garcia

Matt Garcia was murdered this past Monday night.  He was 22 years old, and a councilman for the city of Fairfield, CA - where I grew up.  Matt understood that the youth in Fairfield were not being served, and he was determined to change the future of the city by uplifting the youth.  My conspiracy theory mind set tells me that Matt was killed (probably by Fairfield Police, I’m just sayin…), because he was a voice for the youth, and he was taking steps to bring opportunities and guidance to the community being under served.

The bowling alley and skating rink closed down years ago.  The YMCA (in Suisun), is being turned into a shooting range for the Police Dept. (WTF?!!), there really isn’t much for kids and teens to do out there, except entertain themselves with drugs, violence, and sex.  Fairfield is a suburb with many low income families, and gangs, and teenage pregnany, and meth heads… If you don’t have a strong family support system the path to desruction is easily found.  It is also a city that helped me grow into the person I’ve become, and overall i’m proud to have experienced my childhood and teenage years in the flats.  Matt Garcia believed that Fairfield could become more than another suburban ghetto, and once again injustice is what the youth now have to look forward to in his absence.

I didn’t know Matt, but I hope his story will motivate us to hold positions that can create opportunities for youth in the communities being terrorized by police and the fucked up politics in the cities we call home.  In the 6th grade, Matt declared he was going to be Mayor of Fairfield, at 22 he was halfway there…
