I recently went on a trip to sin ciudad and although it was not a business trip, I still managed to get some research done for a company I have on my wish list to collaborate with in the future. I was just as excited about the trip to Vegas as I was about the FLIGHT there on Virgin America.
I mean Jet Blue had me at “fasten your seat belts” with your own personal TV. But VA had me at “check in” with the fly (no pun intended, damn i’m hangin round Ruby too much!), set up at SFO.
After the usual security check point routine I made my way to the terminal. Nothing seems to indicate what is yet to come… except maybe I keep imagining Madonna is going to pop out singing the infamous song “like a virgin”.
However… there is no Madonna greeting me at the entrance. What I do find myself in is a fresh ass plane!

come along and ride on a fantastic voyage…

touch screen tv’s!

at least they had Rhianna – ella ella ay!
So here’s a quick run down of what you get to entertain yourself with:
I could get more detailed but you get the point… some gripes that I have, which i’m sure will be improving in the future, is the selection available. It’s very limited! and very mainstream for the most part. I’m hoping to see some more diversity in the music selection in the near future.
A suggestion to the folks at VA – talk to the folks over at Pandora and get some licensing deals goin! (more on pandora services soon)
So besides flyin flossy to Vegas, the reason I really like VA is the potential of capturing the attention of thousands of people. If your music is included in their selection that is amazing exposure that could lead to new fans.
The question is how do you get your music to be licensed on their flights?
(i’ll let ya’ll know when i find out)
Definition of Licensing – an agreement permitting a company to market or produce a product or service owned by another company. A licensing agreement grants a license in return for a fee or royalty payment. The licensed use of copyrighted music.
Let me break that down for you – if Virgin America wants to have your music available on their flights for passengers to listen to, you would license your song(s) to them in return for a royalty fee, or flat fee, or however the arrangement is made.
Licensing is common place in commercials, movies, tv shows, juke boxes, elevators, grocery stores, etc. these are all licensing opportunities. As an independent artist you should be aware of this very profitable avenue for your music to be distributed. Although a label would normally take care of this for you, if you’re not signed you still have opportunities to work directly with the companies that specialize in licensing.
FYI – CDbaby offers licensing as part of their services when you sign up.
As for the rest of the trip, you know how the saying goes – “what happens in Vegas…”
