Preface – I posted a blog yesterday titled “spread love!” - based on an article I read that reports music found through blogs can result in an increase in CD sales. It only seems appropriate that I contribute to the statistics and share some of the music that has caught my interest, “Spread Love” will now become another series within my blog, the papa lo way…
For the first installment of “Spread Love” I want to introduce you to Gigio, a young cat from my old stomping grounds of Fairfield, CA – aka “the flatlands” aka “707″, (insert thizz face here). Although most of the music coming out of Fairfield is more so on that gangsta/hyphy tip (see The Federation), there’s at least one emcee representin other ares of Hip Hop that highlights social and political issues, and uses the art form for examination of one’s self, as a type of journal entry through life, and considering he’s in his early 20′s, i’m anxious to see what else he discovers about himself and the world around him…
I met Gigio at the first “Natoma St. Open Mic” that Baysick Ent. hosted back in October ’06. I was searching for emcees around the Bay Area to invite to the open mic, and came across Gigio’s profile on myspace. I liked his style from jump, and needless to say Gigio and I continue to keep in touch till this day.
He was recently featured on mp3.com, dropped the album “Something Wicked This Way Comes” last year, and is currently working on another project- his career as an emcee is only beginning to emerge. Although i’m hella feelin his style, I have yet to see him perform since the open mic, and i’m sure he’s grown since then, so I can’t vouch for him being a well rounded emcee just yet, (no pressure holmes!). But, the potential is there, you can hear it in each verse, and he seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
With that said, check out the track “My Getright” – message is dope, delivery is reminiscent of Brother Ali and a sprinkle of Ol Dirty Bastard (on this particular track), hook is catchy, beat knocks!
